Heatwave Electrical Safety Checklist

Heatwaves put extra pressure on your home’s electrical system. Air conditioners run longer, appliances work harder, and power points can become overloaded without you realising. A few quick checks can help keep your home safe, comfortable, and running smoothly during extreme heat.

Here’s a simple electrical safety checklist to keep in mind during hot weather:

1. Air Conditioning
Your air conditioner works hardest during heatwaves. Make sure vents are clear, filters are clean, and the unit isn’t sharing a power circuit with multiple high-load appliances. If your power keeps tripping when the A/C is running, it could be a sign your electrical system needs attention.

2. Appliances
Avoid running several high-power appliances at the same time, such as ovens, dryers, and dishwashers. Spread usage across the day where possible to reduce strain on your circuits and lower the risk of overheating.

3. Power Boards
Power boards are one of the most common heat-related hazards. Never daisy-chain power boards together, and check that they aren’t warm to the touch. If a power board feels hot or looks damaged, stop using it immediately.

4. Outdoor Power Points
Summer means more outdoor living. Make sure outdoor power points are weather-protected and fitted with safety switches. Avoid using indoor extension leads outside, especially near pools, sprinklers, or wet areas.

A final tip: If your lights flicker, breakers trip frequently, or power points feel hot, it’s best to have a licensed electrician take a look. Heatwaves often reveal electrical issues that already exist.
