Summer Electrical Safety Tips for Your Home and Business

Summer in Western Australia means longer days, outdoor fun, and plenty of time spent enjoying the sunshine. But with the rise in temperature and increased use of electrical devices, it’s also a good time to give some thought to electrical safety. Whether at home or at work, a few simple precautions can help you stay safe, avoid damage to your property, and keep the power running smoothly all season long.

1. General Electrical Safety
Hot weather often means fans, air conditioners, and appliances are working overtime. Make sure you:
• Keep all electrical appliances and cords away from water. Never handle plugs or switches with wet hands or feet.
• Inspect cords and plugs regularly for any signs of fraying or damage, and replace anything that looks worn.
• Avoid overloading power points. Use only one high-powered appliance per socket and steer clear of “daisy-chaining” powerboards (plugging one into another).
• Unplug appliances when they’re not in use to reduce fire risk and save energy.

2. Outdoor and Holiday Lighting
Nothing sets the mood like festive lights, but they can quickly become a hazard if not used correctly.
• Always choose lights and extension leads rated for outdoor use and check that they carry an Australian Standards label.
• Test lights before putting them up and turn them off before heading to bed or leaving the house.
• Keep all lights, cords, and powerboards away from flammable materials like dry leaves, timber, or paper decorations.

3. Storms and Extreme Heat
Summers often bring sudden storms and heatwaves that can affect electrical systems. Stay safe by:
• Unplugging non-essential appliances during severe storms to protect them from power surges.
• Treating any fallen powerlines as live and stay at least 150 meters away and alert others to do the same.
• Avoiding flooded areas, creeks, and drains where submerged powerlines could pose a serious risk.
• Preparing for power outages by keeping a torch and battery-powered radio on hand and knowing where you can go to stay cool if needed.

4. Around the Home and Workplace
Your everyday electrical setup also needs attention during summer.
• Make sure air conditioners, fridges, and other appliances have good airflow and aren’t blocked by furniture or clutter.
• Avoid running extension cords under rugs or mats, as heat can build up and cause damage.
• Never attempt DIY electrical work. Always hire a licensed electrician to ensure safety and compliance.
• For extra protection, have safety switches installed on all circuits to help prevent electric shocks and fires.
